MLow X WGMeets
Randy Ortiz, the abstract artist behind WGMeets, on making abstraction legible, the Cult of Crypto Art, and why he stopped believing in scarcity.
WGMeets, who signs simply as WG, is a New Jersey based Dominican American abstract artist born in New York City. He describes himself as a lifelong artist who has done a bit of everything, from illustration and design to sculpture and photography, and he carries a graphic design career of more than 25 years into the work. He has been active in web3 since 2018 and minted his first pieces on Editional in 2019. His method is unusual: he uses Fractal Labs, the OpenGL fractal browser explorer built by Tom Beddard, and deliberately breaks fractals apart so they stop repeating, turning a symmetrical tool into loose, painterly abstraction. Early work was alien landscape and color theory driven. It later turned inward toward societal opinion and emotion, which is where his best known collection INOculate lives. He also runs the WGM Collective, which finished fifth of ten accepted in SuperRare Space Race 4 in 2022 and earned the right to curate its own artists, and he curated The Bear Chronicles, the first WGMeets publisher drop on Nifty Gateway, featuring Mr Richi. He founded 100Fuegos, a creative agency and consultancy for startups, new media and collectibles, and he works as a collector and advisor as much as a maker.
Abstract fractal art made by pulling Fractal Labs output apart until the repetition breaks, then finishing with color theory learned from a long graphic design career. His 1/1 work sits in the forever collection INOculate on SuperRare, where every piece carries a Matter property naming what caused it. He also builds series with locally installed Stable Diffusion, including the 100 piece FLESH and the Dominican sky series Ventana, and writes his own generative software, WHATTHEFRAC, which drives the weekly New Testament drops.
