MLow X Schmrypto
Never-published conversation with Schmrypto, steward of the Robert Mallory archive, on rescuing a shipping container of mid-century generative art, Checks and Opepen, royalties, and the eight dollar open edition model.
Schmrypto is an anonymous collector and producer who is best known as the steward of the Robert Mallary archive. He ran a payphone business and sold a family hospital enterprise before he turned to collecting, and he has since gathered more than 4,000 pieces and built SMOACA, Schmrypto's Museum of Anthropogenic Crypto Art, a gallery on oncyber that shows only human made work, with 1 of 1s in the Temple and editions in the Courtyard. In 2021 he tracked down what remained of the studio of Robert Mallary, the American sculptor and computer art pioneer who taught one of the first computer graphics courses at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Mallary died in 1997, his studio was sold in 2019, and the leftover work ended up in shipping container storage in New England. Schmrypto bought the lot privately and has spent the years since cataloguing it, interviewing Mallary's family and friends, and releasing it. Under the Mallary Archive and Mallary Media he published Computing Art, the first book about Mallary, produced the short film Recreating Mallary around the sculpture QUAD II for its exhibition at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn in July 2023, and has been minting the plotter drawings on Ethereum as 1 of 1s and editions. He also produces new work, including the Schmaints collection released in 2025.
Collects human made crypto art at volume and shows it in his own oncyber museum, SMOACA. His main project is the Mallary Archive, the largest collection of plotter drawings coded on an IBM 1130, which he catalogues, publishes and mints piece by piece as Mallary Media. He also produces original collections with other artists, such as Schmaints, which he made with the illustrator Chris Rocca and the developer OmbraRD.
