A never published conversation with calligrapher sarah script about reclaiming ownership from Instagram, preserving a dying art on chain, and hiding Mr. Rogers in the work.
Sarah Richardson works as sarah script, a calligrapher and illustrator based in Little Rock, Arkansas. She started in 2014 while working as an administrative assistant at a private wealth management firm, after a college friend mailed her a quote he had penned and then taught her over the phone. She switched from a broad edge pen to a pointed pen in her first in person class and practised every day from there. She wrote Copperplate Calligraphy from A to Z, a step by step workbook for pointed pen lettering, has taught the copperplate style to more than 200 students, and is a member of the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting. She studied under Harvest Crittenden, Nina Tran and Heather Held. Her commercial calligraphy has been done on site for Goop, Tiffany and Co., Sissy's Log Cabin, Little Rock Soiree magazine and the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. She found NFTs in February 2021 through Clubhouse while snowed in at home, and minted her first collections that year. CoinDesk named her one of its most influential people in crypto in 2022. She has since moved several of her collections from IPFS to Arweave so the work outlives the platforms, and she argues that as AI writing spreads, hand calligraphy is worth preserving precisely because a human made every stroke.
Writes copperplate and pointed pen calligraphy in ink on paper, then photographs and composes it for the chain, and also draws digital illustration. Her named collections include Holy Script, Scripted Quotes, Story Emporium, Nifty City, Pretty Please, Mournbirds, Emotional Support Mice and Calligraphy Love. The work runs from single calligraphed words framed by pressed flowers to crypto native jokes rendered as vintage signage.
