Rare Scrilla

Rare Scrilla, also known as DJ J-Scrilla, is a DJ, record producer and multidisciplinary artist who helped invent crypto art. Hanging out in a Pepe the Frog Telegram group in 2016, he and a handful of other artists began minting unique Pepe art onto Bitcoin through the Counterparty protocol, the Rare Pepe project that predates the word NFT. On October 13, 2016 he created DJPEPE, an edition of 169 cards widely cited as the first music NFT: holders got access to a private SoundCloud of exclusive music. He kept working at the crossroads of hip hop and Bitcoin, releasing tokenized music projects such as Money Badger and the generative Grand Rising with RoomInEight on Async Art, partnering with Ghostface Killah on an NFT collection, and becoming a curator at the center of the Fake Rares movement, the punk revival of Rare Pepe culture. His visual work runs from hand drawn marker scenes to AI experiments, and his 42069 project blends AI generated compositions with human loops and guest emcees, made quickly on purpose to timestamp where the technology stood. He describes himself as a chartist and record producer exploring memetic propulsion in the age of the jester.

Draws and paints psychedelic, cartoonish meme scenes in pen, marker, paint and AI, most of them starring Pepe, Bobo the bear and polar bears. Produces boom bap hip hop and tokenized music, from the DJPEPE card to the Grand Rising generative music project and the 42069 AI album. A fixture of Rare Pepes on Counterparty and a curator of Fake Rares.
