MLow X Patrick Amadon
The glitch artist behind the 404 Catalog on broken discovery, conceptual glitch, the Sotheby's walkout, and why art and artist cannot be separated.
Patrick Amadon is a Los Angeles based glitch artist who calls himself a digital disobedient. He started making glitch work in the early 2010s, photographing his own paintings and mangling the files on refurbished secondhand computers; pieces like Static Glitch date to 2013, years before he found crypto art. On chain he became one of the most visible political artists of the movement. In March 2023 his piece No Rioters ran on a giant billboard above the Sogo department store during Hong Kong Art Week with the names and jail terms of imprisoned pro democracy activists hidden in the flashing frames; when the message was discovered the work was pulled, and the censorship made headlines from AP to ArtReview. The same month he withdrew from Sotheby's Glitch-ism auction to protest an all male lineup, which pushed the auction house to pause and rework the sale. In 2023 he launched the 404 Art Catalog, a decentralized, chain agnostic quarterly exhibition built to strip sales history and follower counts out of art discovery. His work Unknown and a Train sold for 10 ETH on SuperRare in October 2023, and Passive Observer debuted on LG Art Lab.
Code driven glitch art, mostly animated GIF and video, that fuses graffiti texture, surveillance imagery and protest politics. He works across SuperRare, OpenSea, objkt and exchange.art, with named bodies of work including Doppelganger, Export Control, Sequence and Dystopia.
