MLow X Guido Disalle
Photographer Guido Disalle on 22 years of hairdressing, the flash as truth, the 33 ETH Poolside sale, and why artists should stop taking orders from collectors.
Guido Di Salle is a Toronto photographer who came to art the long way around. He spent years as a hair stylist for television and fashion, running a salon in Yorkville, and first picked up a camera in 1982 without pursuing photography seriously until decades later. His editorial work ran in GQ Italia, Playboy, Refinery29 and High Snobiety, always in his signature register: hard flash, saturated color, and iconic imagery of cool people, places and things. He entered crypto art during the pandemic and became one of the highest grossing photographers in web3, earning over 600 ETH in about two years. His premium 1/1s sold on SuperRare, where early pieces that went for 3 to 4 ETH in August 2021 traded near 55 ETH a year later. His larger innovation was Editions x Guido, launched with the free mint Sicilian Kiss in April 2021, which drew 14,812 collectors. He pioneered a burn to redeem game: collectors exchanged ten Sicilian Kisses for four photographs from the Meet Me and L'Estate series, and each new drop could be earned by burning older editions. The system turned his editions into a living, deflationary collection of 28 photographs, generated over 1500 ETH in secondary sales for Sicilian Kiss alone, and was valued around 3,800 ETH at its peak.
Photography: high flash, high gloss editorial and fashion imagery, often nudes and Italian Americana staged with props like maiolica tablecloths, vintage Coke bottles and red pumps. He mints 1/1s on SuperRare and runs Editions x Guido, an ERC1155 collection with a burn to redeem mechanic that lets collectors trade old editions for new work.
