MLow X Grant Yun
Grant Yun walks MLow through his walls, his wallet and his record shelf, and explains how a doctor in Wisconsin builds an art career measured in decades.
Grant Riven Yun is a Korean American digital artist who was born in San Jose, California and works out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He minored in religious studies at the University of Wisconsin, went through medical school while his art career took off, and now signs his work Grant Yun, MD. He also dances competitively as Bboy Riven. He began making digital images in Microsoft PowerPoint, stacking and overlaying shapes, then moved into Adobe Illustrator, where he builds flat vector compositions out of thousands of photographs he takes himself on an iPhone and a DSLR. He calls the result Neo-Precisionism, a term he argued for in a 2021 essay, positioning his flat planes and hard edges as a descendant of the American Precisionists and of Edward Hopper and Ed Ruscha. John Steinbeck is a stated influence, and his California work draws on the Salinas Valley near where he grew up. He started minting in early 2021 and became one of the most collected fine art artists in the NFT market, with reported sales above two million dollars. His work has been selected for MoMA Postcard as one of fifteen artists, sold in Sotheby's Contemporary Curated, shown at PACE Gallery in QQL: Parametric Expression, and included in the inaugural exhibition at the Museum of Art and Light.
He makes flat, hard edged vector landscapes and interiors of ordinary American life, then adds a fine film grain so the digital surface reads like print. The work is organised into place based series: Midwest, California, Northeast, Japan, Growing Up and SPACES. He also works in generative code, most notably Primera, a fully on chain p5.js project made with Andrew Mitchell, and has made collage and Chromie Squiggle tribute pieces.
